Stable And Functioning Instead Of Recovering

In this post, I am going to discuss how ‘stable’ and ‘functioning’ are what people actually mean when they say they’re recovering from, or in recovery for, mental illness.

If someone recovers from cancer, it means they no longer have cancer!

So, recovery, to me, is not a good term to be used in regards to progress made by those diagnosed with mental illness(es).

For many, mental illness is something they will have for their entire lives. Especially, when it has been labeled as chronic and/or more severe.

I think there are better terms that are already being used. As noted, ‘stable’ or ‘functioning’. But, not recovery.

Am I ‘stable’ and ‘functioning’? For the most part, I am, yes. But, there are a plethora of problems with my mental health.

These problems have mainly to do with self-care, and the gamut of mental health symptoms I experience with having schizoaffective disorder (depressive type).

  1. I agree. This is something I tried to explain to my husband about our daughter. He kept saying, “I just want this to be over,” and I had to tell him, it’s never over…thanks for giving me the language to replace this with.

    • I am glad I can help. My thoughts regarding recovery are that good stability and adequate functioning are far more important than any “language” we can use. Seemingly, persons with mental illness are somehow to blame for being Ill. Not at all so.
